Sumatra Aceh- Bener Meriah - Harapan Barsama
This Sumatra comes from the well known Aceh district. This district includes the smaller city/regency of Bener Meriah. All of the coffee is sourced from family-owned farms organized around a Cooperative company named Koperasi Buana Mandiri. Mandiri Coffee is located in the Gayo highlands of the Aceh province on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. Gayo Mandiri Coffee operates its own mill and collaborates with farmers to access the international coffee markets, ensuring greater earnings from direct trade relationships. This specific Cooperative has around 1500 members, most growing coffee on less than 2 acres of land.
Grower:Roughly 1300 small-crop farmers part of the Coop Gayo Harapan Barsama Variety:Bourbon, Catimor, and Typica Region:Bener Meriah Regency, Aceh District, Sumatra, Indonesia Harvest:June - December Altitude:1100 - 1500 Meters above sea level Soil:Volcanic loam Process:Wet hulled and dried in the sun Certifications:Fair Trade & Naturally Grown
This Sumatra has a great dense body, which is rich and bold. It has notes of bitter-sweet chocolate and molasses. The finishing notes are earthy with caramel sweetness and super smooth.
Each farm that is part of the cooperative grows coffee on roughly 2 acres of land. Some have more, some have less. This small farm grouping promotes the farmers to produce the best product they can. The better the product quality, the higher price point they can achieve.
Giling Basah, the name of the traditional Sumatran process, involves hulling the parchment off of the bean at roughly 50% moisture content; for comparison, most other processes hull coffee at around 10-12% moisture. This unique Sumatran process results in a trademark flavor profile (low acidity and a richness that lingers on the back of the palate) and gives the green beans a signature dark color.
Naturally Grown coffee is coffee that is grown organically and, in almost all cases, certified. Pesticides and non-organic fertilizers are not used while growing this coffee. While we’re not a certified organic business (which is a massive undertaking), we take great care in following the guidelines set by all regulatory agencies.
