Summary
Farm: Smallholder Members of AMACA (Asociación de Mujeres Productoras Agropecuarias del Cauca)Flavor Profile
This Colombia boasts some smooth chocolate notes with a nutty undertone. This is not as crisp as other Colombia offerings but still shows some light citrus fruit acidity. It is easy to drink and clean with a white tea and wild flower finish.
Details
AMACA (Asociación de Mujeres Productoras Agropecuarias del Cauca) is a women-led coffee cooperative founded in 1999 in El Tambo, Cauca, Colombia. What began with 80 founding members has grown to 140 smallholder women — all farm owners and heads of household — whose livelihoods and families depend on the coffee they grow.
Over the years, AMACA has attracted meaningful institutional support: in 2008, a partnership with Colombia's Ministry of Agriculture, the Cauca governor's office, and the El Tambo municipality helped improve production and quality across 80 member farms. In 2010, the organization Social Action equipped 22 farms with new wet mills and processing tanks.
Today, 140 active members across three villages in the El Tambo municipality farm an average of 1 hectare (roughly 5,000 trees) each — some cultivating 3+ hectares, others less than one. Their commitment to quality shows in their process: members selectively harvest only fully ripe cherries, depulp on the day of harvest, process on-farm, and dry on raised beds inside parabolic dryers.
